July 20, 2011 -- LUNCH: Debra Friedman, New Chancellor at UWT

In April, Seattle native and former University of Washington Seattle administrator Debra Friedman was chosen to be the next top leader at the University of Washington Tacoma. Friedman was named chancellor of the UW Tacoma campus by Interim UW President Phyllis Wise and began her new role on July 1.

Friedman has been dean of the College of Public Programs at Arizona State University since 2005 and ASU Vice President since 2008. Friedman was in charge of ASU’s smaller downtown Phoenix campus and was a professor of public affairs. Friedman holds master’s and doctoral degrees in sociology from the UW and worked there from 1994 to 2005, serving over those years as assistant dean and associate dean of undergraduate education, associate provost for academic planning and director of special projects in development and alumni relations.
